4 February 2024 Week #71: Manila Trip

Dear Family and Friends,
Week #71 1/29/24-2/4/24

We presented a FAITH garden project Monday, but we needed to get more information. The committee wanted us to make sure what kind of chickens they would like. We also needed to find out if all families had room for the 9 fruit trees, and if the three kinds of fruit trees on the list would grow in their area. They also wanted us to check with the vendor to make sure the fruit trees are mature enough to soon put on blossoms and bear fruit. We found out the families would prefer to have Rhode Island Red Chickens instead of Native Chickens, that only five of the seven families have room for the trees, that the variety of trees we have do grow well in their area, and now we are waiting for the vendor to get back with us on the prices of the chickens and the more mature trees. As a result, we didn’t get our questions all answered in time to present on Friday. Hopefully, we will be ready for next Friday.

On Monday evening we took the Welches to dinner at Italiani’s. Our discount coupon expired on January 31st so we wanted to go there one last time while we had a 30% discount. We have a couple other restaurants to go to now. We have been told there is a Chili’s here in town. They said it was good. So, we might give it a try.

On Tuesday we met Rabbi Rabanes at the temple with the last 128 Kangaroo Tubes to get the church’s brand put on them. He brought back the box we gave him a couple weeks ago. We then came home and set up the beauty parlor. Clyda’s hair now looks lovely I might say. We then went to Labangon to take Sister Noble and her companion to lunch at McDonald’s. That evening we had our Lahug Sisters here for Taco Tuesday. They are good missionaries. They shared some neat experiences they are having.

We caught an early flight to Manila on Wednesday morning. While there we got our finances all complete, so we are now compliant. We had it all complete except 0.33 centavos. That is less than a peso. We had to pay one peso and then get a receipt for it and enter that receipt into our expense reports.

We turned in our passports. You have to get an exit endorsement to leave the country after being here this long. I can’t imagine them wanting to keep me. Anyway, the Area Office now has our passports. Hopefully they don’t lose them. We had some good training meetings, went to the Manila Temple for a session and out to dinner Wednesday night with our Humanitarian Team. Tribute was paid to Jairus, who hasn’t been our leader since last August. Also, tribute was paid to the Haynes who go home in February. The Huffs came at the same time but are staying until early April to help train the three new couples coming in March. Haynes will have a 6 month extension to their mission but do it from the USA.

We got home about midnight on Thursday night. As a result we didn’t exercise on Friday morning when we had our normal 7:30 meeting at 7:00 instead. Then we went to a turnover at the DSWD VDRC (Visayas Disaster Relief Center) for a turnover. They are an impressive organization with a huge warehouse where they package food and hygiene materials for people affected by disasters. Currently there has been some terrible flooding in the Davao area on Mindinao. Several have drowned and a few thousand have been displaced. At the turnover we donated three large vacuum pack machines that can vacuum pack four packages on one side in less than a minute, then flip to the other side and do four more while the previous four are taken off and four more put in place to be vacuum packed. It is pretty impressive. They had one machine like this and now they have four.

On Saturday we went to the temple for a shorter walk so we could be ready to go to the market at 7:00 a.m. When we got back from the market we did gospel study then headed to the office to watch Mylie play on the big screen. It was a fun game against Worland. Then we headed to Landers to do some shopping. We came home and watched the Cokeville kids against Kemmerer. It was a true P-day. I did spend about an hour with some project works. Then we had a movie party at the Heaths. We watched “Boys in the Boat”. Clyda and I had both read the book and were anxious to watch it. We enjoyed the movie. It was a crowded front room at the Heaths with them, the Eppersons, the Welches, the Damstadts, Sister Garner, Sister Beasley, and us. We will all join again for dinner tonight. It is going to be a breakfast for dinner, French Toast, hash browns, scrambled eggs, and of course bacon. It will be wonderful I’m sure.

Today at church we listened to some great testimonies. A sister from a part member family was baptized yesterday and confirmed today. They have three younger children that we saw with mom and dad. Both parents shared a brief testimony.

I’m so grateful for the Come Follow Me program and the study of the Book of Mormon this year. The Book of Mormon is true and a powerful book with a ton of lessons for us to learn from. Whenever we think life isn’t fair all we have to do is reflect on Nephi dealing with his brothers and their circumstances. I’m pretty sure they didn’t get around in a Nissan truck, have air conditioning, flush toilets and a Landers store to shop at. What prophet do you know that had it easy. Who has it easy? None of us. We are here to be tested. Will we still look to the Lord in our afflictions like Nephi. His example is tremendous. I’m thankful I have a testimony of Jesus Christ, this is His work, the Book of Mormon is His book for us to help us in our day. Joseph Smith was a prophet, another one who did not have a walk in the park, and stayed true to his death. I’m grateful to be able to see the gospel at work here in the Philippines.
