21 April 2024 Homecoming Talk: Mom

Thank you Mia for speaking about the temple because the temple has a really special place in my heart for the part that it played for Briant and I while we were on our mission.  I'm gonna stick to the plan here. So I'm going to tell you first a little bit about our mission. For those of you who don't know, we were called to serve as Welfare Self Reliance Humanitarian Aid Missionaries. We were to be assigned in the Cebu Philippines Mission. So when that call came and that was a long title for an assignment we weren't really sure what we were going to do but humanitarian aid sounded kind of like helping people, maybe welfare self reliance makes me think about helping people grow food, gardens. Ok! That was up my alley. When we got there and found out what we were actually really assigned to do, it was very different. We were administrators which was not right up our alley. We had a lot to learn from the very very beginning. We were one of five couples that served as human...

24 March 2024 Week #78: A Busy Week as the Lord's Work Moves Forward

Dear Family and Friends,  Week #78 3/18/24-3/24/24 It has been a busy week. We had our normal Monday meeting. Then, we headed to the Ayala Mall. Clyda then headed to the Nuat Thai for an hour long massage. This company is owned by Sister Carredos. Her family is one of our vendors here in Cebu – LSQ/ARDC. We attended the open house of this site (one of her many) here close to the mall about a year ago. We finally decided it was now or never for Clyda to get this massage. It was an hour long and Clyda reports that it was fantastic. I don’t remember how much it cost, but Clyda reported that for that price it would have been good for about 5 minutes in the USA. In the meantime, I was in the mall looking for flash drives and ear buds. Besides the meeting in the morning and at the mall I spent most of the day trying to make sure I was organized to turn our projects over to Elder and Sister Ken and Shaynie Wayman. I hope I’m doing a decent job. There is so much to teach them in such a sh...

17 March 2024 Week #77: Rise and Rebuild

Dear Family and Friends,   Week #77 3/11/24-3/17/24 Last Monday in our Humanitarian Team Meeting we had two projects pass: MV Gamboa Elementary School and Cadiz District Hospital. However, on Tuesday the Core Leadership had questions. Then we didn’t have a Welfare Self Reliance Committee Meeting on Friday to answer their questions. So, they will have to wait until this coming Friday for us to present to be approved and implemented. We are spending a lot of time right now closing projects. On Tuesday we headed out at 6:00 a.m. and we took Elder and Sister Koyle with us to go visit the Rise and Rebuild Farm in Sogod. It is a couple hours north of here if you leave at that time. You will need to add an hour if you wait until 7:00. We had a great visit with Reyson and Judith Pua. They run the farm. We also got to see Clark Rafada again. He is the construction manager for Rise and Rebuild. He was busy last summer with all the youth groups building nutrition centers here in Cebu....

10 March 2024 Week #76: Putting Supanga Elementary School on a Firm Foundation

Dear Family and Friends,   Week #76 3/4/24-3/10/24 Last Monday evening we had a great FHE with the seniors. The Lesson by Elder and Sister Heath was sharing experiences from our lives where we know that Jesus Christ lives, he loves us, and is mindful of us. It was a fun spiritual experience. We heard some amazing stories. I’m grateful for the many times the Holy Ghost has born witness to me of the truthfulness of Joseph Smith as a prophet, that he saw Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. I’m grateful for the testimony from the Holy Ghost also, that the Book of Mormon is true and is the Word of God. I’m also grateful for the powerful experiences I had when I was present, and Harold B. Lee walked into the Hart Building on Ricks College Campus, and I knew by the power of the Holy Ghost that he was a prophet of God also. It was really cool when I was on my mission and a friend attending Ricks College wrote me a letter and shared that same kind of experience when Spencer W. Kimball...

Some pictures of our trip, on the ferry, with Elder Bird and Elder Pope, breakfast with Arman Mapa in Bacolod - who helped us with Tres Reyes Solar – a friend of the Peters, at the school we visited, and then with Clyda’s bowl of soup when we had dinner with the Carys in San Carlos. It was enough to fill ten of our bowls back home! Extra Photos of the Elders for Dinner, Elder Ma?? and Elder Jones, the Temple, Clyda and Annette walking,Bishop Esparaus a temple engineer and some of the grounds crew where four of them have been here the entire time we have been her and the one in green has returned after being gone for a year. They change contractors each year and it is up to the contractor who he hires. And some pictures of the market.
