11 February 2024 Week #72: School Turnovers

Dear Family and Friends,
 Week #72 2/5/24-2/11/24

Hello again from the Philippines. On Monday seven new projects were passed here, however none of them were ours. We have a variety of projects to try and finish up. We will see how it goes.

We had a wonderful FHE led by the Taylors where we were asked to share blessings our families have received while we have been serving here. The Taylors had five children and then twelve years later had number six. This young girl grew up as a single child for the most part. By the time she was in school the other five were all gone. She had two older brothers and three older sisters. While the Taylors were on their mission as Humanitarian Aid missionaries in Cambodia this daughter got married. Mom did go home for the wedding, but the three older sisters did all the organizing and planning of the wedding. Sister Taylor said it was so hard being away at that time, but the real blessing came from the older sisters developing a great bond with this little sister. Ever since then they get together often and have a great relationship. So, now that the Taylors are here on this second mission as temple missionaries, the three sisters joined ranks again as this little sister had her first baby. Sister Taylor went home for three weeks right after the baby was born. But the baby shower and a lot of other things have been arranged and taken care of by the older sisters and once again family relationships continue to grow.

Elder Taylor was a doctor by profession and their mission to Cambodia as humanitarian aid missionaries was to help primarily hospitals. There were no other senior couples there, and no one spoke English except their interpreter. It was basically a mission for Elder Taylor with Sister Taylor just being present. They said the yoke was 95-5. Sister Taylor never wanted to go on another mission. It was a looooooooong 18 months. When they announced they were coming here to the Philippines the children conspired to kill dad for putting mom through this again. However, working in the temple they are yoked 50-50 and she is enjoying it. Other than being away from family she is having a good experience. Elder Taylor served here as a young man from 1971-1973. They are a great couple. When we go to the temple grounds to walk in the early mornings Clyda and Sister Annette Taylor walk together and I just kind of stroll along. It has been fun for me to see this relationship for Clyda develop. It is a good thing.

On Tuesday we headed to the airport to catch a flight to Iloilo. Elder and Sister Peters met us at the Iloilo airport, and we headed to Dumangas and Cayos National High School. We had a good visit there with Sister Dullete and the principal. We stepped in on several classrooms and all were using the TVs to facilitate instruction. We have been getting reports back showing increases on quarterly reports this year over last year with the use of technology donated. That is good to see.

We then headed to Camiros Elementary School in Anilao where we had a turnover for Balabag Elementary School, Balunos Elementary, Camiros National High School, and Camiros Elementary School. It was nice to have them all combined into one. President Quimba, stake president of the Iloilo North Stake, and his first counselor, President Democrito were present. President Democrito attended school at both Camiros schools. He arranged for the turnover. It was a very nice event. Then back to the airport to catch a 7:00 p.m. flight. It was canceled so we got on the 10:00 p.m. flight back to Cebu. We got home about midnight.

On Wednesday, after having driven the truck for 15 months, but only about 5,000 miles, we decided to take it in to get it serviced. They supposedly serviced it big time. It cost about 280 dollars. If I was to do it again, I might want to take it to a different place than what Brother Colipapa took us to. However, it is done. We left the house at 7:00 a.m. to get it over to Mandaue at 8:00. Brother and Sister Colipapa picked us up and took us out to breakfast. They don’t necessarily have breakfast foods, lunch foods, and dinner foods here. Most Filipinos eat the same food for all three meals and the in between snacks. They took us to Burger King for a breakfast of whoppers and fries. Then they brought us home. At 3:00 I received a phone call saying they were done servicing the truck. I caught a ride with Geneses Pedrosa, second counselor in the bishopric, on his habal habal. He took me over to Mandaue and I drove the truck home getting back about 5:00. Traffic gets a little intense from 3:00 on in the afternoon-evening.

On Thursday we had dentist’s appointments with Sister Matthews. I had lost a filling about two weeks ago. It was a big one. It was starting to hurt. It was one that was going to need a crown. I’m grateful the filling she put in over a year ago lasted until now. Now I hope the new one will last three more months until I can get a chance to have it taken care of back home.

Later in the day we got to go to the temple. It is always nice to be in the temple. That evening we had the Lahug Elders over for dinner. That is always nice.

On Friday we met the Apas and Talamban Elders and Sisters for lunch at McDonalds in IT Park. Sister Wheeler is headed home to Farmington, NM, next week when Sister Sorensen and Sister Garner leave. Elder Johnson was one of the Elders and we enjoy him. He is a good Elder. We have enjoyed these sisters although we haven’t gotten to know them as well as sisters that serve in our ward. We will really miss Sister Garner. She has had a great mission. She is a rock, and the missionaries are going to miss her.

That evening we had Sister Garner and Sister Beesley over for dinner. It will probably be our last dinner with Sister Garner. We had a nice relaxing evening with her and Sister Beesley. We visited for a couple hours. It was nice.

On Saturday we headed to the office to watch the Cokeville Panthers vs Snake River Rattlers on the big screen at 8:30 a.m., 5:30 p.m. Friday evening for you. It was fun to watch. I stayed and watched the boys’ game while Clyda went back home. She had a girls’ day out with Sister Garner, Sister Beesley, and Sister Heath as they headed up to the Lakeview Gardens and restaurant. Sister Garner wanted one last time to go there and just see the beauty and relax. She wanted to write in her journal there, have lunch, etc. So, they spent the day and had a great time. I’m glad I stayed home. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy those beautiful gardens, but this is my journal, and I’m glad I stayed home and watched a couple ball games.

“Come Follow Up” on BYUtv is a great program. We enjoy it and listening to “Music and the Spoken Word”. They are peaceful programs for the Sabbath Day. We had some wonderful discussions this week on “Free to Choose Liberty and Eternal Life, through the Great Mediator”. Yes, He has set us free to choose liberty and eternal life. Are we daily making choices to be free, or are we making daily choices that let Satan have power over us? Let us all make choices and act accordingly to improve our lives daily and show our Great Mediator that we want to follow Him and be on His team, the WINNING TEAM! We want to be with all of you and Tillie and Clyde again!
