12 November 2023 Week #59: Surgeries and Micheli's are HERE!!!!

Dear Family and Friends,
Week #59 11/6-11-12

On Monday Clyda and I took Elder Epperson to get RoRo ferry tickets to the Lite Ferries offices here in Cebu. We showed him how he can get tickets here for the Toledo to San Carlos ferry. It is so much easier, and you don’t have a two-hour drive to Toledo and then maybe not be able to get on board. We have learned the hard way on that one.

Then he stayed with us as we went to make a second visit to the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary PT/OT Rehabilitation and Wellness Center. We had a good visit and feel like we can now start on that project. We want to provide them with a traction machine, an ultrasound machine, weights, etc. to help them with the therapy they provide for patients. Many of their patients are permanently handicapped and need help to keep some limbs mobile. They also have patients that have recently become injured. And then all of those in between these two kinds of patients. We have sent into purchasing the list of items to help here. We will see how it goes.

Kenneth called to let me know I wasn’t making the payments correctly on our Lahug Septic and CR repairs project. Oh well, just so the vendors do get paid. I had taken the receipts and sent them in with a cheque requisition like I do with feed payments for the pigs. Well, apparently these need to have a PO. It is being done on an old project from 2019. That is the kind we did with the Kangaroo Tubes, a continuation from a 2019 project. However, this time it needs a PO. I still don’t understand what the difference is from these other projects we have done, but it will get done correctly.

We had FHE that evening at the Koyle’s. It was fun and a good time. We helped with the treats, so we took our favorite Filipino food for dessert, Peach-Mango Pies from Jollibees. Sister Jepson’s replacement came last week so it was good to meet her. Sister Jepson will train her and then go home the 1st of December. Sister Wall is the replacement. She grew up in Bountiful. She graduated in 1972 from Bountiful High. She has lived mostly in Heber where she raised her 6 children, MacDonalds. Her doctor husband left her after 35 years for a young nurse. She took back her maiden name, has worked for a few years and now has decided to go on a mission. She is only serving for 12 months so she was shocked to get a call to the Philippines. She thought she would stay state-side. However, she is here and seems to have a great attitude about it.

We had a great turnover on Friday where we had donated 1,485 desks and 90 fans to a large school here in Cebu, Don Carlos A. Gothong Memorial National High School.

Instead of writing anymore about our office type work and getting ready for the Micheli crew to arrive, I’m just going to paste in what I said in a general e-mail to all. The picture of Clyda with flowers and Snickers was from Elder and Sister Koyle thinking of us during Tami and Tyson’s surgeries. We are surrounded by wonderful people.

“Thank you for your prayers and fasting. Of course as with any surgery both Tami and Tyson came out of 3-4 hour surgeries with some ill responses, nausea, pain, etc. When they have to dig deep to get a kidney and make any kind of incisions there will be pain while healing takes place. We are grateful for the goodness of God and the miracle of the human body that was created for our Spirits and how the body is designed to heal itself after these kinds of things. We are truly grateful!

Tami is home and doing well. She had a tough time coming out of the anesthetic. She is having some ups and downs managing the pain, not wanting to take too many painkillers, but taking enough to keep a lot of pain away. Casey and crew are taking good care of her. Thank you Susie, Olivia, and Tessa for jumping in and helping out. I'm sure there are others that I'm not aware of.

We just visited with Tyson. He of course had similar experiences, but is out of the hospital. He is in a motel close to the hospital. He needs to go in for tests, etc. almost daily to make sure everything is going well. He is on about 12 medications to ease into this and make sure his body doesn't reject this kidney. His parents-in-law have been there to help Candace with the kids. That is a huge blessing as they have taken this week off to help. It was fun to see Tyson look so much thinner as he has been experiencing the loss of a lot of fluids and junk from his body, He is excited to feel so much better and to have thin ankles, knees, face, etc. He says he isn't near as fat as he was looking. It hasn't taken it all away, but it looks a lot better and FEELS so much better. He of course will have some pain as the incisions heal up.

We hope Tami's recipient is doing well with her kidney, and we hope Tyson's donor is doing well as they heal up. We continue to remember them in our prayers also.

We are so grateful and thankful to all of you for your prayers and fasting!!

Thank you,

On another note. Violet was the recipient of a piano this past week from the Ormsby's. We are grateful for that blessing in her life.

On one more note. We are having a great time with Taffy and her family who have come to visit us here in the Philippines. We are having a great time with them. It is amazing the emotion you feel when you see them come out of that airport and you are reunited. I can't imagine not having them for eternity. We are so blessed in the gospel to have the sealing powers so we can have our families forever. I am grateful to my wonderful grandparents on both sides, parents, and siblings for the wonderful life I have had and it instills in me a great desire to try to do my part to be a part of this for eternity. I'm grateful for those same blessings in Clyda's behalf also. She comes from a great family. We often express in our prayers gratefulness for our parents and siblings. We will continue working hard here and trying to do our best to help, but we will be excited to come home to family. We have been blessed in so many ways here and are so glad we are here through the tough times and the great times. We are so impressed with all the other senior missionaries here serving. They have been a huge blessing to us. We marvel at their dedication and commitment. It is so fun to see them interact with these wonderful Filipinos. We continue to be blessed.”

It was such a thrill to watch Taffy and crew arrive. We were anxiously waiting outside the terminal. When we could see them coming down the escalator, oh what excitement! We had a fun Friday evening. Tony and the boys rode back to the motel with me, and Sister Garner gave Clyda and the girls a ride back.

Saturday we spent the day going to the market at Marco Polo. We had breakfast. Then up the mountain to Lake View gardens and restaurant for lunch. Some rode in the back of the pickup going up and then an exchange coming back. Probably against mission rules but not against Filipino rules. In the afternoon Clyda took most of them for a walk up to the open market and then down to the bridge going to Opra so they could see the village along the stream behind our apartment building. We then headed out to the Seaside SM Mall for the evening. We walked around the huge mall and went bowling. Taffy whipped us all bowling a 153. After arriving home, they were ready for bed. Jet lag has hit.

Today was a sleep in day and then a good day at church. Our meetings don’t start until 1:00. It was the primary program. Then Mylie and Mariah went ot YW. They said it was good and in English. Clyda brought the boys home after Sacrament Mtg. Taffy said the Relief Society Mtg was in English but some discussion in Cebuano. It has been a good day.

We visited Elder and Sister Taylor. We had arranged for them to make us some Mango Smoothies. They were delicious. It was a great evening.

We are having a great time with Taffy and family. This is wonderful!!
